How International Team Travel Transformed New England Surf B2012 Navy at SCI Salou
December 19, 2025
Global Sports Experiences was proud to support New England Surf B2012 Navy on their international journey to the Surf Cup International in Salou—a trip that delivered far more than competition. For these young athletes, the week offered immersion, growth, and a firsthand look at what the global game truly feels like.
Experiencing Football the European Way
One of the most powerful parts of traveling abroad as a team is stepping into a completely different football environment. At SCI Salou, the B2012 Navy players encountered professional academies whose athletes live, train, and grow together every day.
The contrast was eye-opening. Spanish academies showcased a level of technical efficiency and comfort on the ball that reflected generations of football heritage. American players, often known for athleticism and physicality, were challenged to adapt quickly—sharpening decision-making, touch, and tempo in every match.
This cultural shift is exactly why international team travel matters. It exposes players to new standards and inspires them to raise their own.
Development Beyond the Pitch
Traveling as a team is just as much about personal growth as it is about football. In Salou, the Surf players navigated:
- New languages
- New foods and daily routines
- A six-hour time difference
- Diverse playing styles
- Opportunities to form friendships with players from around the world
From cafeteria lunches shared with international teams to spontaneous pick-up games around the complex, the boys were surrounded by opportunities to learn, connect, and step outside their comfort zone.
Even small moments—trying Paella Valenciana before the opening ceremony or exploring the waterfront with teammates and families—became part of the experience that shaped this trip.

Match Moments They’ll Never Forget
While GSE’s main event recap highlights the tournament details, this team-focused journey shines through in the moments that defined the B2012 Navy’s path:
- Facing Sporting Lisbon’s Academy in group play
- Advancing through the Silver Bracket with wins over Kaptiva Academy (2–0) and EFX Allstars (1–0)
- A dramatic Silver Final comeback, tying Ullern IF 2–2 and winning on penalties after a perfect 4/4 and a decisive save by goalkeeper Oscar Belge
Watching high-level academy games throughout the week to better understand global competition - Experiencing a live La Liga match: Girona vs. Real Madrid—a highlight for players and parents alike
These moments didn’t just build memories, they accelerated both football and personal development by exposing players to elite performance, new environments, and higher standards up close.
Why International Experiences Matter
For GSE, trips like SCI Salou embody the heart of what we do: creating pathways for teams to connect with the global game.
The B2012 Navy group returned home:
- More confident
- More technically aware
- More connected as a team
- And more inspired about their future in the sport
International travel expands players’ horizons in ways domestic competition simply can’t. It builds maturity, adaptability, and perspective—key qualities for young athletes navigating their next stages of growth.
